Our Best Buy in Champagne: Alain Bailly
Brut Reserve NV 26.75; Rosé Brut Reserve 26.75
A Family of winegrowers for over six generations, the Bailly family run a model property, farming organically and making wines with longer aging than usual for each type. Reserve Brut is composed mainly of the richer-flavored Pinot Meunier and Pinot Noir (80%), the rest chardonnay. Surprisingly for wines with this much flavor at a very affordable price, the wine is partially barrel fermented and aged over 4 years on the lees to give it a delicate toasty nose, crisp flavors with a hint of ginger and almond, along with a stylish, fresh finish.
WE haven’t seen good champagne offered at this kind of price for a very long time, so if YOU like delicious bubbles, here’s your holiday TREAT, priced low enough to drink regularly, too! And the Rosé is flat out beautiful!
Holiday Special Values for Daily enjoyment!
2016 Windy Canyon Cabernet Sauvignon [and ] Syrah
Walla Walla: $13.50 ea.
We ‘discovered’ Chuck & Molly Weaver’s wines earlier this year when they came in from Walla Walla to introduce themselves. We have been great fans ever since! Their wines are full of character, delicious flavors, rich, full and without artifice, just like them. We truly want to support small family-owned wineries, especially when they can provide superior wines at very affordable prices. So should you! (That’s Molly pouring in the photo)
2016 Cantina Morellino ‘Capoccia’ Cigliegiolo IGT Maremma $11.75
Cigliegiolo, ‘little cherry’ is a grape which should be more famous, as it is a parent of Sangiovese, and often blended with the latter to produce Tuscan Classics like Chianti Classico and Vino Nobile. Leave it to the fine Morellino Coop winery/vineyard (photo) & Winemaker Sergio Bucci to produce a pure varietal wine that delightly expresses the grape’s lovely dark cherry scent, fresh sweet cherry flavors and fine, gently forward, delicious flavors. A great wine with holiday ham, or post Xmas party pizza. A very unique wine rarely seen.
2015 Robert Hall Sauvignon Blanc, Paso Robles Reg. 19.00/WoW 9.75
From one of the most awarded & distinctive wineries in Paso Robles comes this absolutely delightful, fresh, but mouthfilling Sauvignon Blanc. Because of the vintage change coming up soon, we got this wine for a song - a multiple award winner in various competions as well! Ripe pear melon, spearmint, wintergreen and citrus bouquet. Med body, lively fruit, good acidity and weight, slightly flinty finish adds panache. A fine complement to fresh grilled or fried seafood, fish, or with a (traditional) southern Italian Christmas dinner of clam pasta!
2014 Dominio de ValdelaCasa Toro, Spain
Reg. 17.00/WoW 14.75
Toro wines were so prestigious that King Alfonso IX of León conceded privileges for its production in the 12th Century. Columbus took Toro wine with him on the expedition to discover America in 1492, because it could survive large journeys, due to its structure and body. Today’s wines from this harsh climate derive from pure Tempranillo, often grown as low-standing bush vines and produce deep-colored rich plummy, full flavored wines. This is one of the best we have tasted, especially at the price, notable for its balanced richness. Dark ruby color, with dark cherry-jam & plum nose. Strong ripe fruit flavors, with a delicious hint of bittersweet cocoa (8 mo in oak), and made from mature bush vines. Classy, fresh, and strong-flavored. Olé indeed!
Three superb Washington Holiday Winners
2015 Long Shadows Feather Cabernet Sauvignon, Columbia Valley $71.50
Randy Dunn’s Cab ALWAYS tops our list of best WA Cabernets yearly. His low-key approach honed over many decades on Howell Mountain in Napa, combined with old vine fruit from Dionsyus Vineyard and other to vineyards, provides a distinctively dense wine with great texture, fruit intensity and full body than provides both current drinking pleasure and age-worthiness. Very Limited
2015 Avennia Boushey Vineyard Arnaut Syrah, Yakima Valley 52.50
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, (94-97) points barrel score - "A true blockbuster in the vintage is the 2015 Syrah Boushey Vineyard Arnaut. Coming from Dick Boushey’s vineyard in the Yakima Valley, it was completely destemmed (they put 15% of the stems back) and aged in primarily neutral barrels. It boasts an inky purple color to go with spectacular notes of black olives, scorched earth, peppery meats and black currants. With medium to full-bodied richness, gorgeous concentration and a big finish, it tastes like the essence of Syrah from Washington State. I love it!" - Jeb Dunnuck== We certainly cannot disagree with Mr Dunnuck on this one—’nuff said!
2015 Avennia Gravura Bordeaux Blend, Columbia Valley 34.50
Chris Peterson’s homage to the great wines of Bordeaux’s Graves/Pessac-Leognan District, Gravura showcases more Merlot in the blend relative to the still dominant Cabernet Sauvignon, and thus more ‘warmth’ and rounder texture than its stablemates. The extra-mature fruit from 2015 gives this newest version even more plushness and focus than previous ones, and definitely represents one of THE best buys in WA red wine. Don’t Miss. Arrives Mid-December.
...and don’t forget the terrific 2015 Chauteauneuf du Papes
After our big 2015 Chat-du-Pape tasting on the 29th, We can safely say there are a wealth of truly excellent rich, powerful yet balanced wines that will reward your holiday table and beyond for many years.. Every one of those featured below has high point scores (if you care), but more importantly to us, they have textural ‘complexity’ along with the exotic, savory, spicy aromas and rich flavors that distinguish the wines of this great appellation.. Additionally, we received another great Gigondas, just northeast of Chateauneuf, which is incredible value as well as delicious. We recommend the following:
2015 Bertrand Stehelin Gigondas 36.75
2015 Domaine Marcoux Chateauneuf du Pape 63.75
2015 Ch. Fortia Cuvée de Baron Chateauneuf du Pape 43.50/21.50-375ml
2015 Le Vieux Donjon Chateauneuf du Pape 73.50
2015 Roger Sabon Chateaueuf du Pape Reserve 52.50
BIG BOTTLES ARE BEST!
Often, BIG is better! Especially with wine, large bottles allow a wine to age longer and more gracefully, offering a more distinctive, celebratory experience. We have a unique collection of Magnums as well as some larger format wines as well. Magnums (equal to 2 –750ml bottles) are perfect for dinners with four or more guests. This holiday season, celebrate in a big way! Here’s a selection of what we have: Magnums (1.5 Liter)
